Transport Carbon Review is not a newsletter of press releases. Every issue carries at least one corridor note, one method piece and one data problem worth arguing about. Clarifications and Working Definitions

Numbers in this magazine are only as good as the definitions behind them. Before you quote a corridor figure in a board pack or a tender response, check which of these caveats applies to the method you are reading.

Tonne-kilometre basis

Unless a method note says otherwise, tonne-kilometres are calculated on payload moved, not on gross vehicle mass. Empty running and repositioning legs are reported separately, because folding them into the loaded figure flatters the result and rarely survives an external review.

Emission factor versions

Factor sets are dated. A figure published in an earlier dispatch may use a different factor version than the one you are comparing it against. Where a comparison matters, we state the factor source and the year it was issued. Mixing versions across a reporting group is the most common cause of unexplained variance.

Rail versus road attribution

On the Johannesburg–Durban spine and the Richards Bay flows, a single consignment often moves by more than one mode. We attribute emissions to the leg where the fuel was actually burned, not to the party that booked the load. That distinction changes who carries the number in a scope 3 report.

Telematics data quality

Fuel and distance pulls are only used here when the logger covers the full trip and the idling channel is intact. Gaps longer than a shift, manual overrides and uncalibrated tank sensors are flagged in the method note rather than smoothed over. If the underlying data is weak, we say so.

Trials and pilot claims

Electric and gas truck trials reported here are described by route, load profile and duration. A short urban depot cycle is not comparable to a long-haul corridor run, and we do not present one as evidence for the other. Vendor-supplied figures are labelled as such.

Small haulier reporting

Methods aimed at fleets without a full-time analyst trade precision for repeatability. That is a deliberate choice, not an oversight. Where a simplified baseline is offered, we note which audit questions it will not answer, so a haulier in Gauteng or the Western Cape knows when to escalate to a fuller method.
